Tien Hol Gong Temple

Taitung’s Tien Hol Gong Temple is a temple dedicated to Matsu. Matsu worshippers will come to this temple. The sculpture of Matsu here is over eight foot high.

 

In 1888 Tzun Dzou Lien, a politician from Taitung, was attacked by some Taitung locals and called on Matsu for protection. The locals were angry about the lack of water in the area. He found water and brought peace back to Taitung. He therefore offered his gratification to Matsu and in 1890 went to Putien County, Fujian Province in China to request that Matsu come to Taitung. After that, this temple was completed in 1891. So this temple has been in Taitung for 116 years.

 

In 1930 because of a powerful earthquake the walls of Taitung’s Tien Hol Gong Temple cracked and the temple was moved to its current location. The temple is decorated with dragon sculptures and it is of a very antique fashion. This temple is in the traditional Chinese style.

 

Tien Hol gong Temple is the largest Matsu temple in Taitung. This is proof that the Han Chinese came to Taitung. Inside, there are many historic artifacts.  Because of the help of many locals to protect and preserve the temple, it has survived the Japanese occupation and war. Many people come to this temple to worship and pray for many different things. It is the center of Taoism in Taitung.
